KANDE HORSE TRAILS
 |
Kande horse was established in 2001 by John Hiam. After traveling extensively through Africa, John decided to settle in the Warm Heart of Africa, Malawi . Having always been an enthuastic horseman from the age of five, the concept of bringing horses from Zimbabwe to an area never previously inhabited by horses, was a challenging and exciting one.
After liasing with the area chief, Chief Fukamapili seventh, and Dave Barton of Kande beach, the ideal location for the stables was found. Set in beautiful brachystegia woodland providing peaceful shade for the horses and areas suitable to establish permanent grazing, John constructed natural, open stables and spacious paddocks.

In September 2001, just two months after the initial plans were made, John made the trip to Zimbabwe to collect the first of the horses. Twelve horses were collected from an establishment in the midlands, that devastatingly had been forced closure.
The 2000 kms journey was fortunately uneventful and all the horses arrived happily to their new home.
Over the next year Kande Horse blossomed, John was constantly busy building the tack room, office, workshop and living quarters, as well as learning the harsh reality of providing for horses in Malawi .
After over coming the first year successfully, John decided to collect more horses from Zimbabwe and so the number was brought up to twenty and the business just grew. The arena was constructed, permanent water provided and with the introduction of mains electricity, life got easier. Sourcing food and bedding for the horses was now seldom a problem, although constant attention was still necessary.
John provided all the veterinary, dental and farriery work for all the horses, providing constant training and educating the local staff, many who had never even seen a horse before.
